Anyone who puts Oakland in a top cities list immediately loses all credibility for me. You cannot walk around there at night, it’s simply too dangerous. And if you have a bike, that thing is getting stolen within the first week unless you want to lug around a 20lb heavy duty steel chain lock wherever you go. If you have one of those, you might make it a month or so before getting bipped Crime should be a factor with these scores, it would change the ratings drastically. It seems almost malicious to ignore crime stats when ranking cities and giving suggestions for people to live. It’s a huge factor, as a consultant with expertise in this field you should know this.

here's the thing. down SF downtown is SMALL. like, maybe a couple square miles. if you walk a 10 mins along any block you will get to the end of it. that anyone feels the need to pay to park there is a joke, there are actual mall-sized parking lots (attached to actual, vibrant malls!) surrounding downtown in most directions that are not a half mile from downtown proper that always have tons space. and even if you just HAVE to park in downtown, only on the most busiest hours of the most busiest saturdays do you find any issue finding a spot. any other time on-street parking right in DT is just a given - so much so that it's FREE ON-STREET PARKING on sundays! the population that lives here has a much more difficult time with traffic, housing, and accessibility outside of downtown. If you're lucky enough to live near downtown SF, it's actually a really accommodating area that's very walkable with many urban amenities nearby. it's the suburban sprawl everywhere else that's a legit nightmare.

I am a pro-car guys, but even I agree that driving a giant truck that you don't need for work or even go off-roading with is absurd. They also tend to be the most obnoxious and dangerous drivers on the road, often intimidating other drivers by tailgating them. I think it all stems from massive insecurity.

As a Mission Viejo resident, I can give you some insights you lack. Mission Viejo is built out as is most of Orange County, so you can't just arbitrarily add housing. You tend to focus on train stations but have you ever checked the travel times via mass transit versus individual car? Those government run transport systems will take 2 to 3 times as long and in the end cost society a lot more via subsidies. Why don't you first admit the problems of tiny studio apartments, rats, no available parking, noise, garbage on the streets, and all of the other big city problems instead of bashing the places where people WANT to live.

The truck is the mechanical embodiment of masculinity. With that said, if you want to drive a big truck then go and take the training and get your Commercial Driver’s License so you can drive a real truck. You want to be a Real Man? Try sacrificing your freedom, your family, and your sanity to be behind the wheel of a 600-hp 80,000lb. 18 wheel tractor-trailer, hauling American freight rain or shine through weekdays, holidays, 14+ hours/day. So instead of wasting $30,000+ making a vehicle something it’s not, why not just cut the carp and drive a REAL TRUCK. -Catch you on the flip side. Big Cat out.

I can't go over how the COVID era outdoor eating has persisted in a city which is so cold & wet for 5-6 months of the year. Driving in this part of town always required your head to be on a swivel now it is ridiculous. Thankfully I live on the West Side so my car loving suburbanite self does not have to deal with the madness unless someone inclined comes to visit.

14:58 I already knew St. Louis offers cost value -- particularly in rent prices, home prices, utility prices, and super cheap and widely available public transportation options. My condo is right in the middle of your downtown (west) shot next to the Soccer Stadium. Unbelievably walkable and plenty of bike lanes being added all the time. St. Louis is built for tourism if you want something to do. Finally crime rates are coming down.

I lived in Philly and the crime is not to be downplayed. The subway is treacherous even during the day (and I've lived in interior Mexico). I imagine it's the same in St. Louis. Also, Lancaster is surrounded by an extremely religious conservative culture. Probably not what most urbanists want. That being said - you usually get what you pay for. I'll take Chicago for value.

ISA is cool, but I've often wished that my 20-year old car had a DSA (Dumb Speed Assist) dial, where I could just turn a ring on the steering wheel in 5MPH increments to manually limit max speed. Not that it's difficult to drive under the speed limit if one actually cares to, but it does take a disconcerting amount of attention to maintain that when you're behind the wheel of an automatic transmission car designed to go highway speeds, that ultimately "wants" to go highway speeds. Cars are inherently unsafe in mixed-mode environments and it's kind of shocking when you think about how few common sense tools like the above manufacturers actually give drivers to compensate for that fact, given that most of the time they're being driven in mixed-mode environments.

Yah Oakland to Philly are both very similar cases, of walkable cities with a ton of character and history tied to large expensive regions, but their reputation and price are dragged down by crime and corruption. But again if you’re willing to put up with the general atmosphere of danger that pervades Oakland, there are some really cheap homes relative to the Bay Area.

If ART could connect to the Rail Runner and there was a similar push for well funded and reliable public transit in Santa Fe, that also connected to it, work and housing access would be so much easier for middle income people in the area. The problem that isn't mentioned often enough when it comes to increasing density is that we don't have a lot of water in the area.

Guy is very woke and left "Men make more money than women" this claim along with other leftist claims like "racism", And all his proposed socialist solutions that involve destroying the economic cycle (like MTA congestion tax which was opposed by working class most; or land value tax, which wud drive out employers and poor people alike) which he likes to drown us in, are probably the 2 most debunked claims next to creationism Aka believing in them in 2024 is like believing in creationism and refusing all evidence to the contrary Yes at face value, men make more than women, but controlling for hours worked, level of expertise etc, they don't. Studies controlling for single never married women vs men, show there's no significant difference

Santa Fe is often listed in the top ten small cities in the world to visit. It's a combination of history, blend of cultures, and surrounding natural beauty, being surrounded by mountains, as much as the architecture. It's a very special place, but like most places, has problems. Also, unlike some super wealthy towns like Aspen, the miles-long Cerrillos Road has plenty of Walmarts (with stucco), fast food restaurants, cheaper hotels, and pretty much no stores selling boots or turquoise.

I never realized pickup trucks offened so many people, I couldn't imagine caring what anyone else is driving, I guess living in a rural area its a non issue. I drive a 20 year old Sillverado 1500 (last generation i really care about) sure theres other vehicles that can do the same things, but a truck does them a lot better, same as other vehicles do other things better, the pickup seems to be the best middle ground for me. No other vehicle would be able to haul a rounded over bed load of scrap metal a couple times a week, (wouldnt necessary fit in an inclosed space) , I guess I could use my trailer, but thats hauling around an extra 2400lbs for nothing basically ( I guess i could get a smaller trailer for that specifically) or make multiple trips in a van or something. I tow a 20ft car hauler fairly regularly, and have at least some small something in the bed of my truck at least 50% of the time (sometimes it could fit in other vehicles, sometimes not), buying selling, and repairing ATVs, I prefer to throw them in the bed over using a trailer when possible, and anyone who dosent have trash pickup knows how unpleasant it is to haul your trash to the dump in an enclosed vehicle. I use my 4wd pretty regularly as well, I know I could have some kind of awd vehicle, but I'm in low range 90% when in 4wd, so to find a vehicle with an open cargo area, 4wd with 2 speed transfercase, with some towing capacity, pretty much limits me to a pickup. I did recently decide to downsize and let my Silverado 3500 dually go, being used to the 1500, the 3500 was a beast for work, never felt the load on it, but the 8.1 was thristy, so I found myself using the 1500 more often, because it would do the same work, maybe not as well, but gets double the MPG empty. As far as just commuter vehicles, my wife has always had the newer more fuel efficient family vehicles for the most part. Whats the stance on full sized SUVs? Basically a halfton pickup, same power train options, and body on frame design, but with an inclosed cargo area, arent they just as bad?

It's not bipolar exactly, it's just the Northwest can't really count on clear skies until about July 5th, so if you get them in April, people are in a hurry to take advantage of it while they can.
